Clarus is ChrysCapital's long only public market fund. ChrysCapital is India's largest and most established private equity firm with $5+bn in AUM. Clarus provides comprehensive investment management and advisory services focused on Indian equities. Through its Category III Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) structure, Clarus primarily offers long-only investments in a diversified portfolio of listed Indian companies.

Investment philosophy

The firm's investment philosophy is simple: the firm finds best-in-class companies in high-growth, high-ROCE sectors that are open to working with investors as agents of change. The sector-wise organisation of the investment team helps focus on strong fundamentals. It helps the firm differentiate megatrends from temporary displacements, identify companies that can benefit from those megatrends, and bring the firm's experience to add value for these companies. Clarus prides itself on its highly disciplined and institutionalized approach to investing. The firm focuses on high-ROCE sectors and meticulously evaluates risk versus reward in both growth and control investments, comparing performance against benchmarks and valuation against 10-year averages. The firm operates with a long-term mindset, looking beyond the froth or pessimism of prevailing sentiment and focusing on a business's true, long-term value. Portfolio construction: sector agnostic investing across market capitalizations to ensure best risk to reward opportunities are selected; growth at reasonable prices with a focus on high ROCE sectors; adequate diversification by maintaining a portfolio of 15-25 stocks; long term patient capital with a hold period of 2-5 years with occasional opportunistic investments.

Pradumn Bajaj joined ChrysCapital in August 2014 and transitioned to Clarus in April 2020 as Deputy Portfolio Manager. Previously an Analyst at New Silk Route and part of the Transaction Advisory Practice at EY. He is a Chartered Accountant and CFA charterholder, with a Bachelor's degree from Mumbai University.

Soumendra Lahiri

Partner and CIO

Soumendra Lahiri joined ChrysCapital in February 2020 and serves as Partner and CIO of Clarus. He has 25+ years of experience in Indian public markets. Prior to ChrysCapital, he held leadership roles including CIO of L&T AMC, Head of Equities at Canara Robeco AMC, CIO of Fortuna Capital, and Co-Head of Equities at DSP BlackRock Investment Managers. He holds a PGDM from IIM Bangalore.
