Investment philosophy

Concentrated portfolios stand as the cornerstone of the firm's investment strategy, with all the firm's portfolios intentionally limited to 20-25 stocks. The firm places paramount importance on stock selection. The firm's meticulous process involves filtering listed companies based on critical parameters, including market capitalization, accounting quality, corporate governance, returns, cash flow, growth, and cash flow conversion from profits. Acknowledging the pivotal role of precise entry and exit pricing, the firm adheres to the fundamental principle that the merit of an investment is contingent upon its valuation. This disciplined approach safeguards the firm against succumbing to market fads and trends, mitigating the risks associated with a 'buy at any price' mentality. AQCG - Scoring tool developed by Monarch AIF for testing a company on its Accounting Quality (AQ) and Corporate Governance (CG) Standards. Companies with higher AQCG scores (>65%) have generally showcased better governance traits and consistently given higher stock returns as compared to companies with lower scores.

Abhisar Jain, CFA, is Head and Fund Manager of Monarch AIF with over 16 years of equity markets experience specialising in equity research and identifying high-quality businesses. He joined Monarch in 2019 and was instrumental in building the AIF division from scratch to INR 1,000 crore AUM. He previously worked with Centrum Broking Limited as lead analyst for Metals & Allied sectors in institutional equities (2011–2019), where he won Best Analyst awards from Reuters Analyst Awards for two consecutive years and Top 10 rankings in Asiamoney's Best Analyst polls (small-cap). He also received special recognition from HDFC MF (3 times), ICICI Pru MF (CIO recognition), and Aditya Birla MF. Earlier in his career he worked at ICICI Securities and TCS. He holds an MBA in Finance from SP Jain Centre of Global Management and is a CFA charterholder (US). He was awarded '40 Under 40 Alternative Investment Professionals in India 2022' by Equalifi.
